STAR Check
Over the past few years, the developers
had observed that many large companies chose to implement complex
audit/assessment systems - often from overseas - to drive their
OHS performance. In many cases these make only passing reference
to local conditions or needs and do not place sufficient emphasis
on the need to involve people at the ‘shop floor’ or
‘coal face’. Their effectiveness relies on a significant
investment of money, time and resources, which are not available
to smaller organisations.
What is STAR Check?
STAR Check is a new product developed
by a young and progressive Australian company to cater to the needs
of medium and smaller businesses. It is a comprehensive task assessment
tool that assesses compliance with an organisation’s OHS management
systems.
By design STAR Check ensures that
assessment of tasks is performed in a consistent and comprehensive
manner so that all key aspects of a task are assessed for compliance.
STAR Check delivers by:
- Having trained assessors applying
an effective task assessment tool
- Rectifying non-compliances on
the job in a non-threatening way
- Improving OHS standards by raising
workers’ awareness of issues and allowing them to ‘learn
by doing’
In addition to the correction of
non-compliances and reinforcement of good work practices, STAR Check
utilises a web-based database to provide trend analysis capability
and a lasting electronic record of assessments.
Managers, supervisors and workers
find it easy to implement the new system as they can see the immediate
benefits of a safer workplace and longer-term advantages of improving
performance, reducing injury rates and improving workplace culture.

Did you know?
From 1 July 2007 all contractors in
NSW are required by law to have a Contractor Safety and Health
Management program. It will
also be a requirement from all of the major mining companies
that contractors health and safety programs meet an acceptable
standard.
As a result of this the Jim Knowles Group
and Mine Resilience Australia P/L have developed the content
th May of a on-line training course with the support of the
NSW Minerals Council, Coal Services Health and Safety Trust,
Australian Institute of Quarrying Education Foundation and
the University of Newcastle.
Major mining companies in Australia including
Centennial, Xstrata, Anglo, BHP, Hansons and Rocla have given
their support to this project.
