Greg Keys

Greg has worked in the mining and general industry for over 30 years as a tradesman, trainer, OHS Adviser and OHS Consultant. He served on the Standards Australia Review Committee (SF/39) for the joint Australian / New Zealand Standard “Safe Working in Confined Spaces” (AS/NZS 2865-2001). Through personal involvement and discussions with mining companies and government departments he has also instigated a new approach to “Safe Working in Confined Space” for the black coal mining industry in NSW.

He has participated in numerous training programs including course research, design and development for the Mines Rescue Service’s competency based training packages. Facilitated the development of nationally recognised Competency Based Learning Packages from Certificate Level 1 to Certificate Level 3, a first for Rubber workers (Beltmen) in the mining industry. He has also conducted face-to-face training including managerial, shop floor, Aboriginal and other multicultural groups. This training has also included the management, analysis and involvement of simulated emergencies at individual mines.

As the OHSE & Training Manager for a maintenance company he developed and implemented an OHS Management System including a RTW program for the 130 employees and provided OHS support to the executive team, management and supervisory personnel. He has also developed and managed a Safety Management Program for a 10-day major maintenance shutdown of a zinc smelter with 60 employees.

From 1 July 2007 all contractors in NSW are required by law to have a Contractor Safety and Health Management program. It will also be a requirement from all of the major mining companies that contractors health and safety programs meet an acceptable standard.

As a result of this the Jim Knowles Group and Mine Resilience Australia P/L have developed the content th May of a on-line training course with the support of the NSW Minerals Council, Coal Services Health and Safety Trust, Australian Institute of Quarrying Education Foundation and the University of Newcastle.

Major mining companies in Australia including Centennial, Xstrata, Anglo, BHP, Hansons and Rocla have given their support to this project.
